Europe, by planning to ban Russian gas imports starting in 2027, is condemning itself to dependence on a small number of energy sources, primarily the United States, which sells gas at high prices, said Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian president.

“That’s their problem. They have always talked about diversifying their own gas supplies, and now they are effectively limiting their diversification. They are rejecting the most competitive Russian pipeline gas or liquefied natural gas, which participates in the competitive global energy supply market,” Peskov pointed out, commenting on Europe’s plans to stop buying Russian gas starting in 2027.

The United States, he noted, “sells gas at high prices.”

By rejecting Russian gas, Europeans are condemning themselves to dependence primarily on Washington, Peskov concluded.

The Council of the European Union adopted on Monday a complete ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas from January 1, 2027, and gas via pipelines from September 30, 2027.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever said at the Davos forum that US President Donald Trump’s request for Greenland raised questions about the dignity of Europe, which is ready to be a “satisfied vassal” of the US, not a “happy slave”. He noted that so far the Europeans have been “condescending” towards Washington and have tried to please the president in the White House, especially through tariffs, to secure his support in the conflict against Russia in Ukraine.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that the West has made a serious mistake by giving up purchasing energy from Russia: in this way, it will fall into even greater dependence due to increased prices, as purchases will continue, but now through intermediaries.
